Make a handwritten signature background transparent
This signature background remover clears white and near-white pixels connected to the outer image border. It works best with dark handwriting on evenly lit white paper and processes the image in your browser without an AI model download. It does not recognize handwriting or redraw your signature. White spaces enclosed by ink can remain, and shadows or textured paper may need manual cleanup. Use the tolerance control and Erase / Restore brushes to check the result before saving.
How to remove a signature background online
Upload your signature image
Choose a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF scan or photo. Crop to the signature in your image editor first, leaving a little white space around the ink.
Remove the paper and refine the strokes
Compare the original and result. Adjust Tolerance, select Apply tolerance, then use Erase for enclosed white areas or Restore for missing ink.
Download a transparent signature PNG
Keep Transparent and PNG selected, then download. Place the saved image over a colored page to check that the white rectangle is gone.
Prepare a clear signature scan or photo
Write on unlined white paper with dark ink, then scan it or photograph it in even light. Keep the camera parallel to the page and avoid casting a phone shadow over the writing. A sharp image helps distinguish narrow pen strokes from the paper around them.
Crop away unrelated text and excess page area before uploading, leaving white space between the ink and every image edge. Each file must fit within 25 MB and 25 megapixels. Upload the original image when possible; screenshots and repeated JPG compression can add pale marks around the handwriting.
Clean up signature loops, paper shadows and pale edges
Begin with the default tolerance and compare the result with your source. If the paper is slightly off-white, increase Tolerance a little and select Apply tolerance. Reapplying tolerance creates a new result from the original, so make this adjustment before your final brush corrections.
Inspect closed letters and flourishes for enclosed white spaces. Use Erase with a small brush to clear them, then Restore if you remove part of a stroke. Preview on a dark background to reveal a white fringe and on a light background to judge the ink. Lower contrast handwriting may need a clearer scan rather than a higher tolerance.
Save and reuse your transparent signature image
Return the background setting to Transparent after checking the edges and export PNG to retain empty pixels. Original size keeps the accepted source canvas dimensions; it does not crop the margins or turn handwriting into scalable vector paths. Resize the image proportionally in the destination document to keep its shape.
Place the PNG over a colored page to confirm that the background is transparent. Some viewers show transparent areas as white even when the file is correct. Keep the source scan and download your edited copy before leaving the tab so you can return to the original handwriting when you need another size or cleanup pass.
Signature background removal: common questions
How do I remove the background from a signature for free?
Upload an image of dark handwriting on white paper. The tool removes border-connected white pixels locally. Check the strokes, adjust Tolerance if needed and download with Transparent and PNG selected. No account, payment or watermark is required.
Is my signature uploaded to a server?
Your signature image is processed on your device and is not sent to a background removal server. This color-removal mode does not download an AI model. Download your result before closing or refreshing the tab because the editor does not keep a saved image history.
Why is white paper still visible inside signature loops?
Automatic removal follows near-white pixels connected to the image border. A closed loop in a letter can isolate white paper from that border. Use a small Erase brush to clear those enclosed spaces, checking that you do not erase the surrounding ink.
Can I remove a gray, colored or shadowed signature background?
This page targets white and near-white paper. Raising Tolerance can include light gray pixels, but it can also weaken faint strokes. Colored paper, strong shadows and ruled lines may remain. A fresh scan or an evenly lit photo on plain white paper usually gives a more usable source.
How do I keep thin handwriting from disappearing?
Use a sharp source with dark ink and raise Tolerance gradually. Compare the cutout with the original and use Restore to recover missing pixels. The tool changes transparency; it cannot reconstruct ink detail that is blurred or missing in the source.
Can I use the transparent signature in Word or a PDF?
You can insert the downloaded PNG into an application that supports transparent images and position it in your document. Keep PNG selected: JPG flattens empty pixels onto a solid background. This tool exports an image; it does not edit documents or create a certificate-based digital signature.
