Erase a photo background and repair the cutout by hand
An automatic mask may leave pieces of a busy backdrop or remove a detail that belongs to your subject. Erase makes brushed pixels transparent; Restore brings back pixels from the original picture. Use both tools to correct the mask after AI processing. This workflow is useful for spaces between arms, a pet’s outline or the edge of a product handle, where a broad automatic selection needs a closer check.
How to erase a picture background online
Create the automatic background eraser mask
Choose a clear picture and let AI remove the main backdrop on your device.
Refine the cutout with Erase and Restore
Open Erase / restore edges. Use a small brush near outlines, then apply the edit to return to the result.
Inspect and download the finished image
Compare on a light and dark background. Export PNG or WebP for transparency, or choose a solid backdrop for JPG.
Use a small eraser brush around narrow gaps
Start with obvious leftover background before working close to the subject. A larger brush covers open areas quickly; a smaller brush gives more control around fingers, handles, glasses and clothing edges. Check the full image after making detailed changes.
Restore a little at a time if you accidentally erase part of the subject. Restored pixels come from the original photo, so restoring across the outline can also bring back the old backdrop. Switch between the two brush modes to adjust the boundary.
Check background eraser results on contrasting colors
A white fringe is easy to miss on white, while a dark fringe may disappear against black. Try both backgrounds before exporting a cutout that will be reused in several designs. Compare the mask with the source to identify areas that should remain visible.
The brush changes transparency rather than repainting the original color. A strand of hair already blended with the old backdrop may retain that color even when the surrounding pixels are erased. Use an image editor with dedicated color correction when that fringe remains distracting.
Save a transparent cutout after manual refinement
Choose PNG or WebP with Transparent selected when the subject needs to sit over another design. If you choose JPG, the empty areas will be filled with a solid color. Original size keeps the accepted canvas dimensions, while smaller size options reduce the export.
Download the finished result before closing the page. The browser session holds the current mask and brush edits; the application does not provide a saved online project that you can reopen later.
Online background eraser and brush questions
How do I erase a background online without an account?
Choose your image and wait for the automatic cutout. Open the edge refinement tool to erase leftover areas or restore subject pixels, then download. The editor does not require sign-up or add a watermark.
What is the difference between Erase and Restore?
Erase changes the brushed area to transparency. Restore recovers original image pixels, including their original colors. It repairs the selection mask; it does not generate new subject detail.
Can I undo a brush mistake?
The refinement tool includes Undo for recent brush edits and Reset to return to its starting cutout. History is limited by image size, so inspect changes as you work and keep the source image available.
Can the background eraser perfectly separate hair?
Fine hair can blend with the source background and remain difficult to separate. Use a smaller brush for visible mistakes, but a clearer source photo may give a better result than extensive manual correction.
Does erasing the background overwrite my original photo?
No. The editor creates a working result and downloads a separate file. The source photo stored on your device is not overwritten.
